Živnosť

Entrepreneurial activity of a natural person, trade license (analogous to FOP)

What does “Živnosť” mean in Slovakia?

Živnosť is the business activity of a natural person in Slovakia. It is similar to the Ukrainian FOP (self-employed person). This is one of the most common ways for foreigners to legally work for themselves and send invoices to clients.

Main types of živnosť

  • Voľná — free, does not require special qualifications (e.g., services, trade).
  • Remeselná — craft, requires professional training or confirmed practice.
  • Viazaná — requires confirmation of specific qualifications or permits.

The easiest way to register a živnosť is through the jednotné kontaktné miesto (JKM — single contact point) at the district office. They will register you with the tax office and insurance companies at the same time. After registration, you will receive an IČO number. A živnostník pays contributions to the Social Insurance Company (Sociálna poisťovňa) and health insurance company (zdravotná poisťovňa) themselves and submits a tax return once a year. You can use lump-sum expenses to simplify accounting.

Important. Registering a živnosť (sole-trader licence) by itself does not give you the right to stay in the country. If you are not an EU citizen, first check if your type of residence (for example, under temporary protection) allows you to be self-employed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a živnosť (sole-trader licence) while under temporary protection?
As a rule, yes — people under temporary protection have access to the labor market and can open a živnosť (sole-trader licence). But conditions change, so check the current rules at the single contact point or the district office.
How much does it cost to open a živnosť (sole-trader licence)?
For each new živnosť (sole-trader licence), a small administrative fee is paid. Online through JKM it is usually cheaper than in person. Check the exact amount on site, because it can change.
Do I pay contributions from the first day?
Medical contributions — yes, immediately. Mandatory social contributions usually arise later, depending on the income from the previous year. This depends on your situation.
