HOW TO DIAL

How to dial in Slovakia

Country code +421 (from abroad)

+421
Slovakia's code. From a foreign number, dial +421 and the number without the first zero.

112 — when there is a threat to life

112
112 — for immediate threat to life or health. Toxicology, mountain rescue, and crisis lines do not replace it. State the address, what happened, and how many people were injured.

Prefixes 0800 and 0850 are different

0800
0800 — toll-free lines within Slovakia. But 0850 is NOT toll-free: the call is charged. From a foreign SIM or in roaming, both prefixes may not dial or may cost money.

Lost or stolen bank card

Card lost, stolen, or unknown transaction? Immediately block the card in the bank's official app. If the app is unavailable, find your bank in the official NBS registry, open the issuer's official website, and use its contact for blocking. Report unauthorized transactions to the bank. In case of theft or fraud, contact the police — 158. There is no single number for all banks.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about emergency numbers

What number to call in an emergency?+

The universal number is 112. It works throughout the country and connects you to the necessary service, so in stress, it's easier to dial it than to remember a specialized one. If you know exactly what you need: 155 — ambulance, 158 — police, 150 — fire department.

Calls are free and do not depend on your account balance. The main thing is that the phone catches the network of any operator — if the call doesn't go through, try to get to an open space or go higher.

When you get through, state three things in this order: where (address or landmark), what happened, and how many people were injured. Do not hang up first — the dispatcher may ask for clarification or advise what to do before help arrives.

Where to call for medical advice if it's not an emergency?+

Since January 1, 2026, the number 116117 operates in Slovakia — non-emergency medical consultation. This is exactly the case when the clinic is already closed, the condition is unpleasant, but there is no threat to life: fever, pain, doubt "is it serious?".

It is important not to confuse it with an ambulance. If a person is unconscious, suffocating, has severe bleeding, chest pain, or signs of a stroke — it is 155 or 112, and there should be no delay.

Separately, there is a toxicology center for poisoning cases — its number is in the "Medicine" section above. It provides consultations, but it also does not replace calling an ambulance if the condition is severe.

What to do in case of a gas leak or power outage?+

A gas smell is not something to "deal with later." Do not turn on or off lights and electrical appliances (a spark from a switch is enough to ignite), do not use open flames. Shut off the gas, open windows, leave the premises — and from the street, call the emergency line 0850 111 727 or 112.

With electricity, the logic is different: the emergency line depends not on the seller you pay for electricity, but on the distributor in your region — ZSD, SSD, or VSD. These are different companies, and calling "your provider" often doesn't help. You can identify the distributor from the list of emergency lines — the link is in the "Emergency and Rescue Services" section.

Before calling, check the circuit breakers in your panel and ask your neighbors: if the power is out only in your apartment, it is most likely an internal apartment problem, and you need an electrician, not an emergency service.

Where to seek psychological help or assistance with domestic violence?+

In the "Crisis Assistance" section above, free lines are listed: 0800 800 566 — Linka dôvery Nezábudka, 0800 500 333 — IPčko, 0800 212 212 — national line for women experiencing violence. Separately, 116 111 for children and adolescents and 116 000 for missing children operate.

You can call these lines not only in a critical moment. Anxiety, insomnia, exhaustion after moving, feeling overwhelmed — these are normal reasons to call, and you don't need to "wait until a real crisis."

But if there is a direct threat to life or health — you are being threatened, beaten, not allowed to leave home — this is no longer a consultation, but the police: 158 or 112. A crisis line will help with a plan and support, but it cannot stop an attack.

What to do if I lose my bank card or documents?+

With a card, speed is key. There is no single number for all banks, so the fastest way is to block the card in your bank's app. If the app is unavailable, find your bank in the official NBS registry and use the contact from its website — do not search for "bank number" in a search engine, there are many fraudulent sites. Report theft or unfamiliar transactions to the police as well (158).

For Ukrainian documents, contact the consular department of the Embassy of Ukraine: current contacts and registration procedure are on the official website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, the button is in the "Assistance to Ukrainians" section above.

Report the loss of Slovak documents (residence permit, driver's license) to the police and the issuing authority. Bring any other identification document with you — this will speed up the procedure.

Are all numbers free and how to call from a foreign SIM?+

No, and this is the most common confusion. Numbers starting with 0800 are toll-free within Slovakia. But 0850 is NOT toll-free — the call is charged, even though it looks similar. Emergency numbers (112, 155, 158, 150) are always free.

From a foreign number, dial the country code +421 and the number without the first zero: for example, 0850 111 727 → +421 850 111 727. Short numbers (112, 116 111, 18300) usually cannot be dialed from abroad — they work within the national network.

Consider roaming separately: when traveling, 0800 numbers may be charged or unavailable altogether. If you plan to call from abroad, find the international number in the +421 format in advance — many organizations publish it next to the toll-free one.
