Dovolenka (holiday) is paid annual leave. These are days when you do not work, but your employer continues to pay you your salary. Every employee with an employment contract (pracovná zmluva) has the right to it.
How many days you get
- As a rule, at least 4 weeks per year.
- Employees aged 33 or older, or those caring for a child, usually get 5 weeks.
You must agree on your holiday with your employer in advance. The employer approves the schedule. If you started working part-way through the year, your holiday days are calculated based on the months you have worked. Unused days are usually carried over to the next year, but it is best not to let them pile up without reason. If you leave your job, you must be paid money for any unused holiday days. Your employer can decide on a collective holiday (hromadná dovolenka), for example, when production stops. However, they must give you notice in advance. For exact rules, check your contract and the Labour Code (Zákonník práce).
