Gross and net salary — these are two amounts for your salary: gross salary (brutto) is the amount the employer writes in the employment contract, and net salary (netto) is what actually comes to your account after all deductions.
What is deducted from gross
- Zdravotné poistenie (health insurance) — contribution for health insurance.
- Sociálne poistenie (social insurance) — contributions for pension, sick leave, unemployment.
- Daň z príjmu (income tax) — tax on income.
This is why the "net" amount is noticeably less than what is stated in the interview. In addition, the employer pays their contributions on top of your gross salary — this is called cena práce (total cost of labor). The exact amount of deductions depends on your salary and benefits (e.g., nezdaniteľná časť — non-taxable part), so always clarify which figure is gross and which is net. You can see the details of your monthly deductions on your payslip (výplatná páska).
