Sociálna poisťovňa (Social Insurance Agency) is a state institution that manages social insurance in Slovakia. This is where your social contributions (odvody) go, and future payments depend on them.
What it covers
- Pension insurance — old-age and disability pensions.
- Sickness benefit (nemocenské) — payments during illness, pregnancy, and care.
- Unemployment — benefits for those who had corresponding insurance.
- Insurance against accidents at work.
The institution has branches (pobočka) in larger cities, and many matters can be handled online through the portal. Employed workers are usually registered automatically by the employer, while živnostníci (sole traders) register and report themselves. You need to apply for sickness benefit or other support — money does not come automatically.
