What does “Úrad práce” mean in Slovakia?

Úrad práce (full name — Úrad práce, sociálnych vecí a rodiny) is a Slovak state institution that deals with employment, social affairs, and family support.

How it helps

It registers job seekers (evidencia uchádzačov o zamestnanie).
It offers job vacancies, retraining, and courses.
It pays state social benefits — child benefit, parental benefit, benefit for material need.

An important detail: the actual unemployment benefit (dávka v nezamestnanosti) is not paid by the úrad práce, but by the Social Insurance Agency (Sociálna poisťovňa) — based on your contributions. The Úrad práce keeps the register and helps you find a job. For many services, it is advisable to make an appointment in advance.

Important. Registering at the úrad práce (labor office) is not the same as receiving unemployment benefits. To get money for being unemployed, you must also contact the Sociálna poisťovňa (Social Insurance Agency) and check if you have enough months worked.
