Nájom

rent; rent payment

What does “Nájom” mean in Slovakia?

Nájom means renting a home. In everyday talk, it also means the monthly payment that a tenant pays to the owner to live there. Officially, the payment itself is called nájomné, but people often say "platím nájom" (I pay rent).

What to check beforehand

  • The rent amount and the date for the monthly payment.
  • If utilities (energie) are included in the amount or paid separately.
  • How to pay — to a bank account or in cash.

The rent amount depends on the city, the size of the home, and what is included in the payment. In big cities like Bratislava, rent is usually much higher than in smaller towns. Always get proof of payment or pay to a bank account — this way, you will have proof that you pay on time. This will be useful when extending the contract and when returning the deposit. If you cannot pay on time, it is best to warn the owner right away — being late with rent for a long time can be a reason to end the contract.

Important. Please check in advance if utility costs (energy) are included in the rent. Otherwise, your actual costs could be much higher than the amount stated in the advertisement.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between nájom and nájomné?
Rent is the actual use of housing, and nájomné is the official name for the monthly payment. In everyday talk, both words are often used the same way for "rent payment."
Are utilities included in the rent?
It depends on the contract. Sometimes energy costs are included in the total amount, and sometimes they are paid separately according to the meters. Be sure to clarify this before signing so you understand the full costs.
When do I need to pay rent?
Usually once a month, by the date shown in the contract. The most reliable way to pay is to the owner's bank account — this way you will always have proof of payment.
