Extended day group (school club)

What does “Družina” mean in Slovakia?

Družina (officially školský klub detí, ŠKD) is an after-school club at a primary school. Children stay there after lessons under the care of a supervisor until their parents finish work.

Who is it for and how does it work

  • It is mainly for younger pupils of primary school.
  • Children eat lunch, do homework, play, and rest. They often go outside to play.
  • Parents pick up their child at a convenient time before the club closes. Sometimes, a special pass is needed.

There is usually a small monthly fee (poplatok) for the družina. The school or the town sets this fee. You need to register at the beginning of the school year by submitting an application directly at the school. Often, this is done at the same time as applying for the first grade. The number of places can be limited, so it is good to register on time. A morning družina before lessons is also often available for children whose parents start work early. Find out the exact schedule and cost directly from your school.

Important. Please check the kindergarten's opening hours and the latest time you can pick up your child. These times can be different for each school.
