Rodičovský príspevok

parental allowance (for childcare)

What does “Rodičovský príspevok” mean in Slovakia?

Rodičovský príspevok is a parental allowance that the state pays to a parent who personally cares for a young child. The labor office (ÚPSVaR) pays it every month.

The allowance is usually paid until the child turns three years old (longer if the child has an unfavorable health condition). It can be received by the mother, father, or another person providing care.

Do not confuse with materské

  • Materské is an allowance from the Social Insurance Agency (Sociálna poisťovňa), it depends on previous income and is paid earlier.
  • Rodičovský príspevok is a fixed state allowance from ÚPSVaR, usually after materské ends.

The rate can be higher or lower depending on whether you previously received materské. You submit the application to the labor office (ÚPSVaR) at your place of residence – in person, by mail, or electronically if you have access to e-services. The payment is usually granted from the month you submit the application, so do not delay.

Important. Parental allowance (rodičovský príspevok) and maternity benefit (materské) are different payments from different institutions. Apply for parental allowance early so there is no break after maternity benefit ends.
