Technický preukaz is a document for a car that confirms its registration and contains technical data: owner, VIN, make, power, etc. The official name is osvedčenie o evidencii vozidla, and in everyday talk, people say "techničák".
Why it is needed
- For re-registration, selling, or deregistering a car.
- For arranging insurance (PZP) and technical inspection.
- It may be requested during a traffic stop.
The document comes in two parts: Part I (a plastic card that you usually carry with you) and Part II. If you are buying a used car, be sure to check that the data in the technický preukaz matches the real car and the seller's identity. Losing the document means you need to get a replacement at the dopravný inšpektorát (traffic inspectorate), so keep it safe and do not give the original to unauthorized persons unless necessary. When buying, it is useful to check the car by its VIN in available registers to avoid problems with liens or hidden history.
