Mandatory civil liability insurance for drivers (autocivila)

What does “PZP” mean in Slovakia?

PZP (povinné zmluvné poistenie) is mandatory civil liability insurance for car owners. It is the Slovak equivalent of "avtotsyvilka" (car insurance). It covers damage you cause to other road users, not to your own car.

What you need to know

  • PZP is mandatory for every registered vehicle. You cannot drive without it.
  • Damage to your own car is covered by separate insurance — havarijné poistenie (KASKO).
  • For trips abroad, a "green card" (zelená karta) is issued as proof of insurance.

You can get PZP at any insurance company. The price depends on the car, its power, and your driving experience. Driving without valid PZP can result in a fine, and the police can stop you to check for insurance. After signing the contract, the insurance company will give you a sticker or confirmation — keep these documents in your car. Prices vary noticeably between different companies, so it is worth comparing offers before signing.

Important. PZP (compulsory third-party liability insurance) covers damage to others, not to your car. If you want to protect your own car (accident, theft, hail), you need separate havarijné poistenie (KASKO) (comprehensive car insurance).
