The market for used cars in Slovakia is growing, but along with prices, risks are also increasing. The average cost of a used car is now €12,300 – that's €500 more than a year ago. But the main problem is not the prices, but dishonest sellers.
Rolling back the odometer is still popular, but now another trick is in first place – lying about the number of owners. Sellers say the car had only one owner to raise the price. In reality, it could be a company car or a former taxi that was driven every day.
Here are some numbers worth knowing:
The average age of cars is 9.23 years. Diesel cars are older (10.05 years), gasoline cars are younger (8.86 years), and hybrids and electric cars are the newest (4.9 years). ️
The most popular models are Škoda Octavia and Superb, with Volkswagen Golf in third place. ️
Prices are creeping up due to inflation and because people want newer and better quality cars.
How they cheat
Besides stories about "one owner," there are a few old but effective schemes:
️Rolled-back odometer. It hasn't disappeared. Lower mileage means a higher price. ️
Hiding accidents. Cars after a serious accident may be repaired cosmetically, but the body damage remains. This is dangerous. ️
Forged service book. Fake service records create the appearance of a well-maintained car, even though it may not have seen a service for years. ️
"Rejuvenation" of the year of manufacture. Sellers sometimes write the year of first registration instead of the year of production in the documents. This makes the car "younger" by a year or two.
How to protect yourself
Here's what really works:
1️⃣ Check by VIN code. This is the first thing to do. The VIN will show the real mileage, accidents, repairs, and if the car is wanted. Use services like carVertical or Cebia AUTOTRACER.
2️⃣ Kontrola originality (Originality check). In Slovakia, this is mandatory when re-registering a car from abroad. They check if the VIN and engine number match the documents. The procedure is done at specialized stations.
3️⃣ Inspection with an expert. If you don't know much about cars, bring an independent mechanic with you. They will find hidden defects, traces of accident repairs, and assess the condition of the engine and chassis.
4️⃣ Test drive (skúšobná jazda). Don't just drive around the parking lot. Try the car at different speeds and on different roads. Listen for strange noises, check the brakes, gearbox, and electronics.
5️⃣ Pay attention to documents. Check the technical passport (technický preukaz). Compare the VIN in the documents and on the car body. Make sure the seller is the real owner or has a notarized power of attorney.
A thorough check before buying will save your money, nerves, and possibly your life.
