Dopravný inšpektorát (Traffic Inspectorate) is a police department (ODI, district traffic inspectorate) responsible for vehicle registration and driver's license matters. This is where you go to re-register a car or exchange your license.
What they handle
- Registration, re-registration, and de-registration of cars.
- Issuing and exchanging driver's licenses.
- Issuing license plates (ŠPZ).
Appointments are often required (online), and without one, the queues can be long. Check in advance which documents you need to bring – usually a passport, residence permit, and car documents are required. The correct Dopravný inšpektorát is usually determined by your place of residence, so check which office you should go to. Prepare documents with enough time, as some procedures are not completed in one visit. If Slovak is difficult for you, it is worth bringing someone who can help with translation and filling out applications.
