Prepis vozidla (vehicle transfer) is the official re-registration of a car to a new owner, which is done at the dopravný inšpektorát (police department). Without re-registration, the car legally remains with the old owner, along with all fines and road tax.
What is usually needed
- Vehicle registration certificate — osvedčenie o evidencii vozidla (both parts).
- Purchase or gift agreement and documents of both parties.
- Valid PZP (compulsory insurance) for the new owner.
Valid STK (technical inspection) and emisná kontrola (emissions control) are often required. An administrative fee (správny poplatok) is paid, the amount of which depends on the engine power in kW — more powerful cars cost more. You usually need to book an appointment online in advance. It is best to re-register the car immediately after purchase to avoid problems. If the seller and buyer live in different districts, each party completes part of the process at their own inspectorate. After re-registration, you will receive a new vehicle registration certificate with your details, and sometimes new license plates.
