Preukaz poistenca is the insured person's card, meaning your health insurance card. Your insurance company (zdravotná poisťovňa) issues it, and you must show it every time you visit a doctor or a pharmacy.
What you should know
- There are several insurance companies in Slovakia — for example, VšZP, Dôvera, and Union.
- On the back of the card, there is often a European card EHIC for treatment in other EU countries.
- Carry the card with you — without it, you might not be seen by a doctor, or you may be charged for the visit.
If you have just registered for insurance, the card will arrive by mail within a few weeks. Until you receive it, the insurance company usually issues a temporary paper confirmation that is accepted instead of the card. The card shows your personal insurance number — this is often requested when making a doctor's appointment or calling an ambulance, so keep it handy. For children, the card is issued immediately after birth along with registration with the insurance company.
