Havarijné poistenie (Slovak for "accident insurance") is voluntary car insurance (similar to KASKO). It covers damage to or loss of your own car: accidents you caused, theft, vandalism, natural disasters. It is often confused with mandatory PZP.
How it differs from PZP
- PZP is mandatory. It covers damage you cause to others.
- Havarijné is voluntary. It covers your own car.
Conditions, coverage, and deductibles (spoluúčasť) vary between insurance companies, so you should compare policies. Havarijné insurance is especially useful for new or expensive cars. A bank may require it for cars bought on credit or lease. The price depends on the car's value, your driving experience, and the options you choose. Carefully read what cases the insurance does NOT cover to avoid surprises during a claim payout. Before signing, ask about coverage limits, the deductible amount, and what to do if an insured event occurs.
