Vodičský preukaz is a driving license, an official document that gives you the right to drive a vehicle in Slovakia. The police issue it — the road inspectorate (dopravný inšpektorát) at your place of residence. The license itself has categories (for example, B — for passenger cars).
Ukrainian document in Slovakia
- You can drive with your Ukrainian license for a certain time because Ukraine recognizes the Vienna Convention on Road Traffic.
- If you are staying for a longer time, you usually need to exchange (vymeniť) your Ukrainian license for a Slovak one.
The conditions and timeframes for exchange depend on your type of stay (pobyt), so check them in advance at the inspectorate. Usually, they ask for a current photograph, a medical certificate (lekárska prehliadka), and an official translation of the Ukrainian document. You must always have your license with you while driving, along with the car's documents. Tip: do not postpone the exchange until the last moment — the process can take several weeks.
