What does “Živnostenský list” mean in Slovakia?

Živnostenský list is a document that proves your right to conduct a specific živnosť (sole-trader licence) in Slovakia. It is basically an official permission for business activity, without which you cannot legally issue invoices.

Historically, a paper "živnostenský list" was issued, but today it has been replaced by osvedčenie o živnostenskom oprávnení (certificate of trade authorization). In everyday language, the old name is still often used, so do not be scared by the difference.

What is stated in the document

Your name and identification number IČO (company ID number).
A list of activities that you are allowed to conduct.
The start date of your business activity.

The document is issued by the jednotné kontaktné miesto (single contact point) immediately after successful registration of the živnosť. It is worth keeping a copy and having it handy — banks and clients may ask for it.

Important. Keep your certificate and your IČO number — you will need it when opening a business bank account, signing contracts, and issuing invoices to clients.
