Tehotenské (pregnancy benefit) is a monthly cash payment that a pregnant woman receives from the Social Insurance Agency (Sociálna poisťovňa). It was introduced in 2021 and is a separate payment.
Do not confuse it with other things
- it is not materská (maternity benefit) — that is paid after the child is born;
- it is not the medical condition tehotenstvo (pregnancy);
- tehotenské is paid monthly during pregnancy, starting from a certain week.
To receive the payment, you need a certain period of sickness (nemocenské) insurance — the fact of being pregnant is not enough. Your gynecologist issues a confirmation, which you submit to Sociálna poisťovňa. The amount depends on your previous income. Because the conditions relate to insurance history, not every pregnant woman is entitled to tehotenské, so it is best to check your situation directly with the Social Insurance Agency. The payment is granted for the months before childbirth, and after birth, it is replaced by another benefit.
