Tehotenstvo a pôrod (pregnancy and childbirth) is accompanied by a whole system of medical care in Slovakia. The first step is to register with a gynecologist (gynekológ), who will monitor the pregnancy, issue referrals for tests and ultrasounds, and provide documents for payments.
How it works
- You choose a gynecologist and regularly attend check-ups (prenatálna poradňa) throughout your pregnancy.
- You choose a maternity hospital (pôrodnica) where you want to give birth and register there if necessary.
- Insured pregnant women can receive a tehotenské (pregnancy benefit) payment from the Social Insurance Agency, and after childbirth, a materské (maternity benefit).
All of this requires health insurance (zdravotné poistenie). If you do not yet have Slovak insurance, it is advisable to arrange it as soon as possible, as check-ups and childbirth may otherwise be costly. After the birth, the child must be registered and a pediatrician chosen for them. Many hospitals offer childbirth preparation classes where everything is explained step by step.
