Gynekológ (gynecologist) is a women's doctor. In Slovakia, women must register with a gynecologist separately from their general practitioner. Registration with a general practitioner (praktický lekár) does not include gynecological care.
Why you need a gynecologist
- annual preventive check-up (preventívna prehliadka);
- contraception and women's health;
- pregnancy care from the beginning until birth.
You can make an appointment with a gynecologist directly, without a referral from another doctor. Bring your health insurance card. The annual preventive gynecological check-up is covered by insurance and is free for you. If you are pregnant, your gynecologist will manage your pregnancy, schedule tests, and prepare documents for benefits (like maternity allowance - tehotenské). As with pediatricians, some doctors may not have openings, so you might need to look in another district or city. Registration is free, and check-ups covered by insurance are not paid for separately.
