Stravné lístky

Meal vouchers (food vouchers) or a cash supplement for lunches

What does “Stravné lístky” mean in Slovakia?

Stravné lístky (meal vouchers) are vouchers for food that an employer provides to employees for lunches. Today, they are most often given as a card, and instead of vouchers, you can choose a financial contribution for meals (finančný príspevok na stravovanie).

Providing meals is usually the employer's duty for employees who have worked enough hours in a shift. The employer pays part of the cost, and you pay the rest from your salary.

What you should know

  • usually you have the right to choose between a card or voucher and money;
  • you can pay with vouchers in shops and restaurants that accept them;
  • this right may not apply to short-term work (dohoda).

Exactly how much is allocated per day and what part the employer covers depends on the current rules and your contract, so clarify this when you get hired. Remember that this is not a "company bonus" but your legal right, so do not hesitate to ask about it.

Important. If your employer offers a choice between a meal card and money, think about this: money goes to your bank account, but you can't pay everywhere with the card. Usually, you can only change your choice after a certain period.
