What does “Sobášny list” mean in Slovakia?

Sobášny list (marriage certificate) is an official document that proves two people are legally married. In Slovakia, it is issued by the registry office (matrika) at the local government office (mestský alebo obecný úrad) where the marriage took place.

Why you need it

For family reunification and to get a residence permit for your spouse.
To confirm the couple's shared last name.
For social benefits, child allowances, and insurance applications.

If your marriage took place abroad (for example, in Ukraine), Slovak institutions usually require a translation by a sworn translator (úradný preklad), and often an Apostille or superlegalization. The Ukrainian document usually also needs to be registered in the Slovak special registry (osobitná matrika) – only then it is fully valid for official procedures. Make several certified copies in advance: the original may be requested for viewing, and a copy may be kept on file.

Important. A foreign marriage certificate almost always needs an official translation and legalization (Apostila). Check the requirements in advance — without them, the document might not be accepted.
