Potvrdenie o pobyte (confirmation of residence) is an official certificate that proves your registered address in Slovakia. It is issued by the Foreigners' Police (cudzinecká polícia) or the local authority, depending on your residence permit type.
Where it is needed
- Opening a bank account.
- Enrolling a child in school or kindergarten.
- Getting a job and signing contracts.
- Registering a car, visiting a doctor or an insurance company.
Do not confuse this certificate with your residence card itself: the card confirms your legal status, while the potvrdenie o pobyte confirms the specific address where you are registered. There is usually a small administrative fee (správny poplatok) for the certificate, and it is mostly issued on the same day. Keep several recent copies ready, as different institutions may require a separate copy for their specific case. If you change your address, update your registration as soon as possible — an old certificate with outdated information can cause problems at the bank or at work.
