Minimálna mzda

Minimum wage

What does “Minimálna mzda” mean in Slovakia?

Minimálna mzda (minimum wage) is the lowest salary that an employer in Slovakia must pay for full-time work. Its amount is set every year.

How it works

  • There is a monthly minimum wage (for employees with a salary).
  • There is an hourly minimum rate (for hourly pay).
  • For more complex work, higher minimums apply based on levels of difficulty (stupne náročnosti práce).

The amounts are reviewed at the beginning of each year, so always check the current value. An employer does not have the right to pay less than the established minimum – this is against the law. For part-time work, the minimum is calculated proportionally to the hours worked.

Important. The minimum wage is shown as gross (before taxes and contributions), so you will receive less "in hand". If you are paid less than the minimum wage, this is a reason to contact the labor inspection office.

Frequently asked questions

Is this amount before or after taxes?
The minimum wage is stated as gross, meaning before taxes and insurance contributions are taken out. The net amount "in hand" will be noticeably smaller.
Is there a minimum for working half-time?
Yes, but it is proportional to the time worked. For incomplete working hours, the minimum is calculated according to the number of hours.
What to do if they pay less than the minimum?
This is a violation. First, talk to your employer. If that does not help, contact the labor inspection office (inšpektorát práce). Keep your contract and payslips.
