Trvalý pobyt (permanent residence) is permission to live permanently in Slovakia. It gives you more rights than temporary residence. It is less dependent on the specific reason for your stay and offers more stability.
Why it is useful
- It is not tied to one employer or study program.
- It gives wider access to the job market and social services.
- It is a step towards a long-term status and a stable life in the country.
Permanent residence is usually granted after several years of legal stay based on temporary residence. However, there are separate grounds for it (for example, family reasons). The exact conditions and timeframes depend on your situation, so you should check them with the cudzinecká polícia (foreigners' police). Even with trvalý pobyt, you remain a foreigner. Instead of an občiansky preukaz (ID card), you receive a residence permit (pobytový preukaz) and must monitor its expiration date.
