Ročné zúčtovanie

annual recalculation (of tax or health insurance)

What does “Ročné zúčtovanie” mean in Slovakia?

Ročné zúčtovanie (annual reconciliation) is an annual recalculation. It checks if the tax or insurance contributions you paid for the year are the same as the amount you should have paid. The result is either an overpayment (preplatok), which is returned to you, or an underpayment (nedoplatok), which you must pay.

Two main types

  • Ročné zúčtovanie dane (annual tax reconciliation) is a recalculation of income tax. For employees, the employer usually does this if you ask on time and do not file a tax return yourself.
  • Ročné zúčtovanie zdravotného poistenia (annual health insurance reconciliation) is a recalculation of health insurance contributions, done by your insurance company (zdravotná poisťovňa).

You must ask your employer to do the tax reconciliation by the deadline (usually in mid-February). The insurance company sends the result of the health insurance reconciliation itself in a written decision. Check your mail carefully: there is usually a limited time to respond or pay, and missing the deadline can cause problems.

Important. The recalculation can show not only an overpayment but also an underpayment, which means you need to pay more. Do not ignore a letter from the insurance company or employer with the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an annual reconciliation and a tax return?
If you only have a salary from an employer, your employer can do the tax recalculation for you — this is simpler. You submit the tax return (daňové priznanie) yourself if you had other income, for example from a živnosť (sole-trader licence).
What to do if there is an overpayment?
If you overpaid, the money is returned to you. For taxes, your employer usually pays it back within a set time. For health insurance, the insurance company returns the money.
What happens if you do not pay the underpayment?
The debt will not disappear — it can be collected further, even by forced collection. It is better to pay on time or agree on a payment schedule.
