Pohotovosť

emergency (urgent) medical care outside of office hours

What does “Pohotovosť” mean in Slovakia?

Pohotovosť (emergency medical service) is for urgent (on-call) medical help in acute situations when a regular ambulancia (outpatient clinic) is closed: in the evening, at night, on weekends, and holidays. You go here when a problem is urgent but not life-threatening.

Types of pohotovosť

  • For adults and separately for children (APS — ambulancia pohotovostnej služby, on-call service clinic).
  • Dental — zubná pohotovosť (dental emergency service).
  • Pharmacylekárenská pohotovosť (on-call pharmacy).

There is usually a small co-payment for a visit, and appointments are not made in advance, so be ready to wait in line for a while. The addresses and schedules of on-call points are published on city and hospital websites because they change according to a schedule — it is worth checking them in advance. If the condition is life-threatening (severe chest pain, loss of consciousness, heavy bleeding) — do not go to pohotovosť, but call 155 or 112 immediately.

Important. If your life is in danger, call 155 (ambulance) or 112 — pohotovosť (emergency medical service) is for urgent but not life-threatening cases.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between pohotovosť and rýchla (155)?
You go to the emergency room (pohotovosť) yourself for a serious but not life-threatening problem. You call an ambulance (155 or 112) when there is a threat to life and a medical team needs to come to you.
How much does emergency care cost?
Usually, a small extra charge is collected for a visit; there are exceptions for some categories. It is best to check the exact amount and exceptions on site or with your insurance company.
Do you need a referral for emergency care?
No, a referral is not needed. But bring your document and insurance card (preukaz poistenca).
