Caregiver's Benefit (OČR)

What does “Ošetrovné” mean in Slovakia?

Ošetrovné is a cash benefit from Sociálna poisťovňa (Social Insurance Agency) that an insured person receives when they must stay home to care for a sick child or another family member. In everyday talk, it is often called by the abbreviation OČR (ošetrovanie člena rodiny – caring for a family member).

When you can get it

  • A child or close relative is sick, and a doctor has confirmed the need for care.
  • A kindergarten or school is closed due to quarantine or other reasons.

First, you go to the doctor, who issues the relevant document. Then, you submit an application to Sociálna poisťovňa. The payment is a percentage of your previous income, not your full salary, and it is provided for a limited number of days. Those who pay contributions for sickness insurance (nemocenské poistenie) are eligible – for example, employees or voluntarily insured persons. The exact amount and duration depend on your specific situation, so it is best to check the final conditions directly with Sociálna poisťovňa.

Important. Ošetrovné (sickness benefit for care) does not cover your full salary. It is only a part of your income, and the number of paid days is limited. Check the current conditions with Sociálna poisťovňa (Social Insurance Agency).
