IBAN is an international bank account number in a standard format. It is used for all payments in the SEPA (Single Euro Payments Area) zone. This is the number you give when you send or receive money.
What it looks like
- It starts with a country code: a Slovak IBAN starts with the letters SK.
- A Slovak IBAN has 24 characters (the letters SK and then numbers).
IBAN replaces the old format "account number / bank code": if you have the recipient's IBAN, a separate bank code is usually not needed. You can find your IBAN in your bank's app, in online banking, or in your contract. For regular payments (rent, social security contributions, bills), the IBAN is often entered with payment symbols – a variabilný symbol (variable symbol), which helps the recipient identify your payment.
