Zubár (official name: zubný lekár) is a dentist. In Slovakia, it is a good idea to register with a specific dentist who will become your regular doctor and keep your records.
What is important to know
- Basic treatment is usually covered by insurance, but you often have to pay extra for better materials (like white fillings).
- To keep full coverage, you usually need to have a check-up once a year (preventívna prehliadka).
- It can be difficult to find a dentist who accepts new patients, so ask in advance.
Before more complex treatment, ask for a cost estimate: how much insurance will cover and how much you will have to pay. This way, you will avoid unexpected bills. For severe pain, you can go to the dental emergency service (zubná pohotovosť), which is open on weekends and at night. Children go to a pediatric dentist, and their check-ups are usually free. We recommend not to delay your first visit, as it can take months to get an appointment with a good dentist.
