Byt means an apartment in an apartment building, unlike dom (a separate private house). This is the most common type of rental housing in Slovak cities.
How apartment size is indicated
- 1-izbový byt — a one-room apartment.
- 2-izbový byt — a two-room apartment, and so on.
- Garsónka — a small studio apartment.
Please note: the number of "izieb" (rooms) does not include the kitchen. This means a 2-izbový byt has two living rooms plus a separate kitchen, bathroom, and hallway. Advertisements also state the area in m² and the floor (poschodie). Carefully check if the apartment is rented furnished (zariadený) or unfurnished (nezariadený) — this will affect what you need to buy. You will constantly see these abbreviations on rental websites. Besides the number of rooms, pay attention to the presence of a balcony, a cellar (pivnica), and a parking space. Before renting, it is useful to inspect the apartment in person and check if everything is working — plumbing, heating, and appliances.
