Scholarship — is financial help for secondary school pupils and university students. It helps to pay for study costs. The most important for newly arrived families is the "sociálne štipendium" (social scholarship), which is given based on the family's income.
Main types
- Sociálne štipendium — for pupils and students from low-income families; the amount depends on income.
- Motivačné / prospechové štipendium — for good grades or for studying in demanded vocational jobs.
You apply at the school or faculty with documents about the family's income. The scholarship is usually paid every month during the school year to a bank account. The amounts and income limits are reviewed every year, so apply even if you are not sure — the school will decide if you get it. University and doctoral scholarships are a separate category with their own rules. Please note: a scholarship does not reduce other family payments, so applying is worth the effort.
