Poplatok za komunálny odpad (fee for municipal waste) is a mandatory local fee for the removal and disposal of household waste. Everyone who lives in a town or village pays this fee. The community (mesto or obec) itself sets and collects it, not the service provider.
How it works
- You submit a registration (ohlásenie) to the taxpayer register at the municipal office (meria) where you live.
- The town decides the amount of the fee in its ordinance (VZN) — it depends on the town and the number of people.
- The town sends a decision (rozhodnutie) with the amount; you can pay it all at once or in parts.
Foreigners must also register and pay — their residency status does not exempt them from the fee. If you move, inform the office so you pay for your current address and do not get charged for two places at once. Many towns offer benefits or discounts for certain categories of residents — check with your municipal office for details.
