Čestné vyhlásenie

Solemn (honest) declaration — a written confirmation of facts under personal responsibility.

What does “Čestné vyhlásenie” mean in Slovakia?

Čestné vyhlásenie (declaration of honor) is a formal statement where a person confirms certain facts under their personal responsibility. It is used very often in Slovak bureaucracy, especially when something is difficult to prove with a separate document.

How it works

  • You state in writing that the information is true, and you sign the document.
  • Sometimes the institution requires the signature to be officially notarized.
  • The form for the statement is often provided by the institution itself or can be found on its website.

Examples of use: confirming your place of residence, marital status, or that you do not own certain property or have a certain income. Important: a false čestné vyhlásenie (declaration of honor) leads to legal responsibility, so only sign what you are sure about. If you do not know something for sure, do not state it as a fact. Usually, the statement includes your details, the specific claim, the date and place, and your signature at the end. It is best to get a sample wording from the institution for which you are preparing the document.

Important. Declaration — not a formality: you can be punished for false information, from a fine to criminal charges. Sign only what is true; if you do not know some facts, do not state them. Some institutions also ask to have your signature certified.

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from a normal application?
The Declaration of Honour is signed under personal responsibility, and false information has legal consequences. This gives the document weight where there is no official confirmation by another document.
Do I need to certify my signature?
Not always. Often, a simple signature is enough. But some institutions require an officially certified signature (osvedčenie podpisu) — check this in advance.
What happens if you make a false statement?
It depends on the situation: from refusal of the procedure and a fine to criminal responsibility in serious cases. Therefore, do not state as a fact what you are not sure about.
