Traveling in Slovakia by car or planning to drive through the country? Then you need to know about the vignette – a fee for using highways and expressways. Without it, you risk a significant fine! In Slovakia, the road payment system is simple, but it has its own details, especially if you have a car with a trailer or a vehicle over 3.5 tons. In this article, we will explain in detail what a vignette is, how much it costs, where to buy it, who is exempt from the fee, and how the system works for trucks.
What is a vignette and who needs it?
A vignette is a fee for using highways (D1, D2, D3, D4) and expressways (R1, R2, R4, R6) in Slovakia. It is needed for all vehicles, regardless of the country of registration, if you plan to drive on these roads. This applies to both local residents and those passing through Slovakia in transit. The vignette is valid only in Slovakia – other EU countries (like Austria or the Czech Republic) have their own road payment systems, so check the conditions in advance. In Slovakia, the vignette is electronic, meaning you don't need to stick a label on your windshield – it is linked to your car's license plate.Who needs a vignette?
- All passenger cars up to 3.5 tons that use highways. A trailer requires a separate vignette if the total weight of the vehicle and trailer exceeds 3.5 tons.
- Motorcycles do not need a vignette – the law applies to two-axle vehicles in categories M1 and N1. They are not on the list of exemptions. Vehicles of the police, rescue services, people with disabilities (if registered), and historic vehicles are also exempt.
- For vehicles over 3.5 tons, a different system applies – the electronic toll e-myto (more on this below).
How much does a vignette cost and where to buy it?
The cost of the vignette depends on its validity period, but not on the type of vehicle (up to 3.5 tons) or the number of trips. Current prices (unchanged since January 1, 2025):- 1 day: €8.10.
- 10 days: €10.80.
- 30 days: €17.10.
- 365 days: €90.
Fines for not having a vignette
The typical scenario is not an "on-the-spot fine," but a penalty notice from a camera: €150, or €100 if paid within 15 days. The scale from €100 to €500 applies to proceedings against the driver, not the letter that arrives by mail; if an appeal is lost, an additional €30 in court costs will be added. Control is carried out automatically via cameras that read license plates. If the system does not find your vignette, a fine will be sent by mail. To avoid problems, always check if your vignette is active before your trip. Not all highways are tolled: over 200 km of sections are exempt from the vignette, including the entire outer bypass of Bratislava D4. For vehicles over 3.5 tons (e.g., trucks, buses), the vignette does not apply. Instead, the e-myto electronic toll system is used. How it works?- Register your vehicle on the website emyto.sk.
- Purchase an OBU. This is an On-Board Unit that records your travel on toll roads. You can get it at e-myto service points, at gas stations, or border crossings. The OBU tracks which toll roads you use and calculates the toll amount based on the vehicle type, weight, emission class (EURO), and distance traveled.
- Choose a payment method:
- Prepaid: Top up your account in advance, and funds will be debited automatically as you drive.
- Postpaid: Use the roads, and then pay the bills sent by the system.
