Dotácia na stravu (subsidy for meals) is a state subsidy that fully or partly covers the cost of school lunches. It is often called "obedy zadarmo" (free lunches), and many families who are eligible do not apply for it.
Who is usually eligible
- Children from families in material need (hmotná núdza).
- Children from low-income families (at the level of the minimum living standard).
- Other categories — depending on current rules, which change periodically.
To receive the subsidy, parents submit an application to the school or canteen, sometimes with proof of income. The lunch usually needs to be ordered in advance through the canteen or a chip card. Important: the child must actually attend lunches — for absences without a valid reason, the subsidy may be withdrawn, and you will have to pay for the uncovered lunch yourself. If the child is sick, the lunch must be canceled on time — otherwise, that day will not be covered.
