Dotácia na stravu

Subsidy for food (school lunches)

What does “Dotácia na stravu” mean in Slovakia?

Dotácia na stravu (subsidy for meals) is a state subsidy that fully or partly covers the cost of school lunches. It is often called "obedy zadarmo" (free lunches), and many families who are eligible do not apply for it.

Who is usually eligible

  • Children from families in material need (hmotná núdza).
  • Children from low-income families (at the level of the minimum living standard).
  • Other categories — depending on current rules, which change periodically.

To receive the subsidy, parents submit an application to the school or canteen, sometimes with proof of income. The lunch usually needs to be ordered in advance through the canteen or a chip card. Important: the child must actually attend lunches — for absences without a valid reason, the subsidy may be withdrawn, and you will have to pay for the uncovered lunch yourself. If the child is sick, the lunch must be canceled on time — otherwise, that day will not be covered.

Important. Rules and categories change every year, so even if you were refused last year, ask again this year. You usually need to submit the application before the start of the academic year or semester.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a subsidized lunch cost?
The subsidy covers most of the cost; parents sometimes pay the small difference or money for materials. The canteen will tell you the exact amount.
Where to submit the application?
Usually to the school or school canteen. They will tell you there what documents are needed this year.
What happens if a child misses lunches?
If a child is absent without a good reason, the subsidy can be canceled, and parents may receive a bill. Always unenroll your child from lunch if they are sick.
