Who has the right to work in Slovakia

Ukrainians with temporary protection status (dočasné útočisko, "odídenec") have free access to the Slovak labor market – no separate work permit is needed, and the employer handles the paperwork. This means you can apply for any vacancy in this catalog on par with Slovaks (except for civil service). The main thing is to work legally, under a written contract: "na čierno" (undeclared) work deprives you of salary guarantees, sick pay, and insurance record.

The catalog includes vacancies from all regions of Slovakia – from warehouses and production to gastronomy, construction, care, and IT. Filters will help you quickly find what suits you best: no Slovak language required, with accommodation, with weekly advances or transport, from a direct employer or through an agency. Salaries are listed gross everywhere (before deductions) – just as they are written in the employment contract; how much you will get "on hand" is explained below.

Facts on the page have been verified with official sources – the employment service upsvr.gov.sk, the Ministry of Labor employment.gov.sk, the Social Insurance Agency socpoist.sk, and the IOM Migration Center for Ukrainians mic.iom.sk. Figures that change annually (minimum wage, supplements, contributions) are given as estimates, and we recommend checking the links.

GUIDE

Work in Slovakia for Foreigners 2026

A brief overview of the section: who has the right to work, what are the forms of employment, how much they pay, how to read gross salary, and what to pay attention to in order to avoid fraudsters. Detailed answers are in the frequently asked questions below.

Right to work with temporary protection status

Temporary protection status (dočasné útočisko) gives Ukrainians access to the Slovak labor market without a separate work permit – on par with Slovak citizens, except for civil service. No permit needs to be obtained: the employer only submits a notification of your employment to the labor office (informačná karta) – approximately within 7 working days, free of charge and without a separate application from you. The status is valid until March 4, 2027 (the term is periodically extended – check on minv.sk). The conditions for access to the labor market are explained on mic.iom.sk, and the employer's obligations are on upsvr.gov.sk.

Forms of employment: employment contract, dohoda, or živnosť

There are three ways of employment in vacancies. Employment contract (pracovná zmluva, "TPP") – full employment relationship with maximum rights: paid vacation of 4 weeks or more, sick pay, notice period upon termination, severance pay. Dohoda (agreement outside of employment relationship) – a more flexible form for temporary or part-time work with less protection. Živnosť (a sole-trader licence, similar to a sole proprietorship) – this is no longer employment, but self-employment "na faktúru", where you pay contributions and taxes yourself.

FormSocial protectionWho it suits
Employment contract (TPP)Maximum: vacation, sick pay, severance payStable full-time / part-time work
Dohoda / brigádaPartial; contributions are usually paid, but with fewer rightsSide job, seasonal, temporary employment
Živnosť / SZČOYou insure yourself; higher "on hand" incomeSelf-employment, services, IT, freelance

⚠️ If an employer offers to register you under a živnosť instead of an employment contract for regular full-time work "for them" – this may be an illegal švarcsystém (sham sole-trader registration instead of employment). You can calculate a sole trader's net income and compare the forms using our calculators: sole trader calculator and "Sole trader vs. s.r.o.". Rules for dohôd and contributions are on socpoist.sk and podnikajte.sk.

Salary 2026: minimum wage, gross, and supplements

In 2026, the minimum monthly wage is 915 € gross (first degree of labor complexity), the hourly rate is approximately 5.259 € for a 40-hour week. "On hand" from the minimum wage is approximately 725–735 € – the rest consists of taxes and employee contributions (social + health, totaling about 14.4% from 2026). Above the basic rate, the law guarantees supplements (mzdové príplatky) – approximately for night work (from +40%), Saturday (+50%), Sunday (+100%), and holidays – so the actual income is often higher than the "bare" salary. Official confirmation of the minimum wage for 2026 is on employment.gov.sk.

Work without Slovak language

Many vacancies – in warehouses, production, cleaning, construction, agriculture – do not require Slovak: Ukrainian or Russian is sufficient there, and coordinators are often bilingual. The "No Slovak language" filter shows exactly these positions – this is the main entry point for those who have just arrived. At the same time, Slovak (or close Czech) opens up better-paid jobs working with people: cashier, waiter, bus driver, care, office. Information on courses and qualification recognition for regulated professions is on mic.iom.sk.

Accommodation, transport, and advances – what to look for

For newcomers, not only money but also living conditions are often crucial. The filters include labels for "Accommodation" (free or paid – clarify how much is deducted from the salary), "Transport to work" (company transport to the factory or warehouse), "Weekly advances" (installment payments), and "Help with documents". Carefully read what exactly is included in the offer: "free accommodation" sometimes means a dormitory for several people. All conditions must be in the contract.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Common questions about work

Do I have the right to work in Slovakia with temporary protection status?+
Yes. Persons with temporary protection (dočasné útočisko, "odídenci") have free access to the Slovak labor market — a separate work permit is not required. You can get a job under an employment contract or work under a dohodou on the same terms as SK citizens (exception: civil service). The employer handles the registration: they submit a notification (informačná karta) about your employment to the labor office — approximately within 7 working days. The status is valid until March 4, 2027 (check at minv.sk).
Employment contract, dohoda, or živnosť — what's the difference?+
An employment contract (pracovná zmluva, "TPP") means full employment relations with maximum rights: paid vacation of 4 weeks or more, sick leave, notice period, severance pay. A dohoda is a simplified form for temporary or part-time work; contributions are still paid on most dohôd. A živnosť is no longer employment, but self-employment "on invoice": you pay taxes and contributions yourself, but more remains "in hand." If an employer insists on a živnosť instead of a regular employment contract for a permanent job — it might be an illegal švarcsystém.
What is the minimum wage and supplements in 2026?+
In 2026, the minimum monthly wage for the first degree of work complexity is €915 gross, the minimum hourly rate is approximately €5.259 for a 40-hour week. In addition to the base rate, the law guarantees supplements (mzdové príplatky) — approximately for night work (from +40%), Saturday (+50%), Sunday (+100%), and public holidays. Therefore, the actual income is often higher than the salary stated in the vacancy. Specific percentages are updated annually; official confirmation is at employment.gov.sk.
Why is the salary "gross" and how much will be "net"?+
Vacancies and employment contracts always state the salary as gross (hrubá mzda) — before deductions. Employee contributions (social + health, totaling about 14.4% from 2026) and income tax are withheld from it. For low salaries, approximately 78–80% of the gross amount remains "in hand." For example, from the minimum gross of €915, you get approximately €725–€735 net. The exact amount depends on tax reliefs (tax-free allowance, child tax bonus).
Is it possible to find a job without knowing Slovak?+
Yes. Many vacancies do not require Slovak — these are mainly warehouses, manufacturing, packaging, cleaning, construction, agriculture, and seasonal work. Turn on the "Without Slovak" filter — the catalog will show exactly these positions. At the same time, knowing Slovak (or close Czech) significantly expands your choices and increases your salary. For regulated professions (doctors, nurses, teachers), qualification recognition is also required in addition to language skills.
What do the "Housing" and "Transportation" labels mean — and are they safe?+
The "Housing" label means the employer helps with accommodation — either free of charge or for a fee. Clarify: how much is deducted from the salary, is it a private room or a place in a dormitory, and are the conditions specified in the contract. "Transportation to work" is a company bus to the factory or warehouse. "Weekly advances" are payments in installments during the month. These conditions are legal and common, but they must always be documented in writing.
How does a direct employer differ from an agency?+
A direct employer hires you directly into their staff — you sign a contract with the company itself. An agency (agentúra dočasného zamestnávania, ADZ) is an intermediary that hires you for a client company. Both options are legal. A legal agency must have a ÚPSVaR license and provide you with conditions equal to those of permanent employees. The main thing is: neither a direct employer nor an agency has the right to charge you money for employment.
Can I be charged a fee for employment?+
No. Charging employees a fee for job searching or employment is forbidden by law. A legal employer and a licensed agency earn not from you, but from the client. Any demand to pay "for processing," "for reserving a spot," "for a visa/documents in advance" is a sign of fraud. Do not transfer money before signing the contract, do not hand over original documents, and check the agency in the upsvr.gov.sk registry. If you encounter this, click "Report."
How to apply for a vacancy?+
Open the vacancy and click "Apply." The employer sets the contact method: it could be a phone call, a message on Telegram, or a link to an application form. Some vacancies have the "Apply without resume" label — they accept applications via a short call or message. Tip: before the first conversation, clarify the employment type (contract or dohoda), gross salary, schedule, and what is included in "housing/transportation."
How not to miss new vacancies?+
Set up filters for yourself (city, category, "without Slovak," "with housing," etc.) and check the catalog regularly — new vacancies are added constantly, and they are quickly taken in an active market. The most convenient way is to subscribe to our Telegram channel with vacancies: there are fresh offers from all over Slovakia daily, including those not yet on the website.
