Direct Work from the Employer, Without Agencies
A direct employer concludes an employment contract themselves, without an intermediary who earns from your salary — this means more transparent and stable conditions.
Many foreigners consciously look for work directly — from a direct employer, without an intermediary agency. The reason is simple: a direct employer concludes an employment contract (pracovná zmluva) with you themselves, you communicate without a 'broken telephone,' and there is no intermediary between you and the company who earns from your salary. This often means more stable conditions and more transparent agreements.
This does not mean that employment agencies are bad. A temporary employment agency (agentúra dočasného zamestnávania, ADZ) operates legally if it has a license from ÚPSVaR and pays you the same as the client's permanent employees. The problem is not with agencies as such, but with illegal intermediaries and schemes where they try to charge the employee a fee 'for a position.'

Frequently asked questions about work
How is a direct employer better than an agency?+
A direct employer concludes an employment contract with you themselves, you communicate without an intermediary and see who is actually hiring you — this usually means more transparent conditions and more stable work because there is no link earning from your salary. At the same time, an agency can also be a legal option; the main thing is to check the employer before starting and never pay for employment (upsvr.gov.sk).
Is it legal to work through an employment agency?+
Yes, if it is a temporary employment agency (ADZ) with a ÚPSVaR license: by law, it is obliged to conclude a contract with you and provide the same conditions as the client's permanent employees (principle of equal treatment). An intermediary without a license who asks for money for placement, does not show a contract, or pays 'in cash' is illegal — you can check an agency in the register at upsvr.gov.sk.
How to check the employer before starting a shift?+
Find the company by its IČO (company identification number) in public registers (Commercial Register, Trade Register), request a written employment contract before the first shift and carefully read the salary, position, and conditions, and if they are hiring through an agency — check its license in the ÚPSVaR register. Absolutely do not pay for employment — no deposits or payments 'for a position'; labor violations are handled by the Labor Inspectorate.
They are asking me for money for employment — is this normal?+
No, this is a direct sign of fraud: payment from an employee for job placement is prohibited by Slovak law — it doesn't matter what they call it ('for a position,' 'for processing,' 'deposit,' or 'agency fee'). A legal employer and a licensed agency will never take money from you for the job itself — if you encounter such a demand, refuse and check the company at upsvr.gov.sk.
