Work in Slovakia with Temporary Protection Status
Temporary protection status gives Ukrainians the right to work without a separate permit — access to the labor market is almost like for Slovak citizens.
Temporary protection status (dočasné útočisko, its holders are called odídenec) gives Ukrainians one of the biggest advantages on the labor market: the right to work without a separate work permit. Access to the market is practically the same as for Slovak citizens (the exception is public service). This means you can get a job under an employment contract, work under a dohodou (agreement outside of employment relations), or open a živnosť (sole-trader license).
The employer handles the employment process: they submit an informačná karta (information card) to the úrad práce (labor office) — a notification about hiring a foreigner. This is free of charge, and no separate application from you is needed. The main thing is to work legally, under a written contract: working "načierno" (without registration) is illegal and deprives you of salary guarantees, sick pay, and insurance record.

Frequently asked questions about work
Can I work in Slovakia with temporary protection status without a permit?+
Yes. Temporary protection status (dočasné útočisko, holder is an odídenec) grants the right to work without a separate work permit, and access to the labor market is practically the same as for Slovak citizens — the only exception is public service. You can get a job under an employment contract, work under a dohodou, or open a živnosť; access conditions for persons with protection are explained at mic.iom.sk.
What is an informačná karta and who submits it?+
An informačná karta is a notification that the employer submits to the úrad práce about hiring a person with temporary protection; submitting it is the employer's duty, not yours, it is free of charge and does not require a separate application. Make sure the employer has actually registered you and signed a written contract — this is your protection regarding salary, contributions, and sick pay (upsvr.gov.sk).
Can I open a živnosť or work under a dohodou with protection status?+
Yes, protection status gives access to all forms: an employment contract provides the most rights (vacation, sick pay, insurance record), a dohoda is convenient for temporary work, and a živnosť (sole-trader license) is for when you work for yourself or for several clients. What is more profitable "on hand" depends on income and expenses; a calculator for živnosť can help you calculate net income at calculator of živnosť.
Why is it not worth working "načierno" without a contract?+
Working without registration (načierno) is illegal and dangerous specifically for you: without a written contract, there are no salary guarantees, you will not receive sick pay, you do not accumulate an insurance record for a pension, and you are left unprotected if the employer does not pay. Since protection status already grants the right to work legally, there is no reason to agree to work "in an envelope" — labor violations are handled by the Labor Inspectorate.
