Introduction of electronic invoice system in Slovakia

Slovakia is officially starting a large-scale transition to the electronic invoice system (e-faktúra), which will be one of the most important steps in the digitalization of the national economy. This initiative, based on the European ViDA (VAT in the Digital Age) package of measures, aims to modernize tax reporting and unify the rules for businesses throughout the European Union. The Financial Administration has already published the first instructions, preparing businesses for the fact that paper documents and regular PDF files will gradually become a thing of the past.

Who is affected by the new rules

The reform will affect almost everyone who conducts business activities. VAT payers will be required to issue invoices exclusively in digital XML format when working with other companies (B2B sector). However, the innovation will also affect regular self-employed individuals (živnostníkov) who are not VAT payers. Although they will still be able to issue simple invoices, the law requires them to have the technical capability to receive electronic invoices from their large suppliers, such as telecommunications operators or energy companies. The good news is that ordinary citizens (end consumers) will not be affected by these changes – when shopping in stores, the procedure for issuing receipts and invoices will remain the same.

Technical side of the process

The data transfer process will become fully automated. A mediator will appear between the sender and the receiver – an accredited service provider, which experts have aptly called a "digital postman." Businesses will be able to choose a convenient integration method: from direct connection of accounting software with state services to using special mobile applications that work like email. For those who want to test the new format right now, the free service zrobefakturu.sk has been launched, where you can validate XML documents and learn about their structure.

Timeline and cost of the transition

The Financial Administration has chosen a path of gradual adaptation to avoid chaos in the business environment. Starting in May 2026, companies will be able to join the system voluntarily to adjust their processes. However, from January 1, 2027, the use of e-faktúra will become a mandatory legal requirement. The cost issue remains individual: expenses will depend on the volume of document flow. According to preliminary estimates, processing one invoice will cost between 5 and 50 cents, with many services offering free packages for small businesses with a low number of transactions.

Entrepreneurs are advised not to delay and to contact their accounting software providers now to check if their software is ready for the new requirements. Timely preparation will help avoid technical failures at the moment when the digital invoice becomes the only legitimate way to confirm business transactions in Slovakia.
