The city has just opened Drevný trh and the section of Protifašistických bojovníkov from the turn at Mlynskej to the VSE building for traffic — and drivers in the center of Košice faced a new closure. In the Old Town, the second stage of repairing the emergency road section has started, along with it the traffic organization has changed, the city government reported.
The main restriction of this stage is that Rooseveltova street on the section between Drevný trh and Protifašistických bojovníkov is completely closed to traffic. If you are used to driving through the center to work or for errands, allow extra time for detours and watch for temporary road signs. The city asks drivers for patience: the work is done in stages, so the traffic scheme will change more than once.
What exactly is closed now
Work is underway on the right lane of Protifašistických bojovníkov in the section from Drevný trh to Senný trh. At this time, the following restrictions apply:
- Rooseveltova street between Drevný trh and Protifašistických bojovníkov is completely closed.
- It is not allowed to turn onto Rooseveltova from Protifašistických bojovníkov.
- Turning from Protifašistických bojovníkov onto Senný trh is prohibited for all vehicles except buses.
On the other hand, Drevný trh and part of Protifašistických bojovníkov from Mlynskej to VSE are open again — the first stage of work there has already been completed.
How bus traffic has changed
The repair also affected public transport. The Jakabov palác stop in the direction of Námestie osloboditeľov is temporarily not served: routes 16, 21, 23, 24, 25, 30, 38, 71, 72 and night routes N1–N7 stop at the tram stop Senný trh. How much it costs and how long it will last
The repair started on July 27, divided into stages that should be completed by the end of August — to be ready before the school year begins. The cost of the work is about 100,000 euros, funded by the city from its own budget, writes Košice Online. Summer was chosen for such work intentionally: during holidays, road traffic is lighter.
The scope of work is standard: milling the old surface, laying new layers of asphalt, and leveling sewer manholes to the road level. There is also an interesting detail — the city is using the project as a test site for low-temperature asphalt. According to Mayor Jaroslav Polaček, its laying temperature is about 50°C lower than usual. This reduces energy consumption and emissions, and the surface cools faster and opens to traffic sooner.
If the experiment succeeds, more environmentally friendly asphalt may appear on other streets of Košice. For now, the practical conclusion is one: until the end of August, it is better to allow extra time when driving through the city center.
