The European Union is officially preparing a big update to the rules for getting a driver's license. The goal is to reduce road deaths as much as possible. The changes will be introduced step by step. Countries must include them in their own laws by 2028–2029, but it is good to prepare for the new situation now.
There are 6 key new rules to expect.
No more limits for automatic cars
Currently, drivers who passed their test in a car with an automatic transmission have the note "code 78" on their license. This stops them from driving a car with a manual gearbox. With the new rules, to remove this limit from the license, you will not need to take the full test again. It will be enough to complete a practical course at a driving school.
Driving from age 17
Europe is introducing a "supervised driving" system. Young people will be able to get a category B license at 17, but until they are 18, they can only drive with an experienced driver next to them who will watch the situation. Driving alone on the road is only allowed from age 18.
Category B might become "heavier"
Because electric cars and campers are popular, and they weigh a lot due to batteries and equipment, the weight limit for the standard category B is planned to be raised from 3,500 kg to 4,250 kg. This will be allowed if the driver has at least 2 years of driving experience.
Driving trucks for young people
To fix the shortage of truck drivers in Europe, the EU will allow people to drive trucks (category C and C1) also from age 17. This will be allowed if they work under the supervision of an experienced driver.
Digital license in your smartphone
The plastic card will no longer be a required item in your wallet. A digital license on your smartphone will be officially accepted the same as a physical document all over the EU. However, the usual "plastic" card will still be an option.
Strict medical checks
Special attention will be given to drivers' eyesight and general physical condition. Also, the tests will become harder. They will check the ability to use modern driver assistance systems (like adaptive cruise control, emergency braking systems, etc.) and reaction in stressful and risky road situations.
