Bratislava's city government has quadrupled the number of patrols in several key locations that have long had a reputation for being dangerous. If you often travel through major transport hubs or walk in the city center, you will notice new cameras, improved lighting, and even mobile observation towers. The city is trying to fight theft and drug trafficking, which trouble both locals and Ukrainians living in the capital.
Which locations are under increased control
The changes mainly concern places where thousands of people pass every day and where the crime statistics are traditionally the highest. The main focus was on three points:
- Trnavské mýto — one of the largest transfer hubs in the capital. Not only has the number of police officers increased here, but the lighting around the New Market Hall (Tržnica) and the neighboring shopping center has also been significantly improved. City services have cleared out neglected "blind spots" where marginal groups often gathered and changed the entrances to some underground spaces to make them visible.
- Kamenné námestie — a square in the very center near a large Tesco supermarket, which has attracted pickpockets and homeless people for years.
- Zátišie district in the Nové Mesto city district, where a high level of street crime has also been recorded.
What exactly has changed on the streets
Besides the visual clearing of the space, the main change is the presence of law enforcement officers. In the same Trnavské mýto, the number of patrols by the Mestská polícia (municipal police) has quadrupled this year compared to last year.
The city has also started testing an innovation — a mobile camera tower. It is placed directly in the center of a problem area, allowing operators to see the situation from above and instantly direct a patrol if someone starts a conflict or tries to steal something. In addition, municipal police officers themselves are increasingly using body cameras — this reduces the number of unfounded disputes and serves as evidence in case of incidents.
Why patrols may not be enough
Despite these efforts, the problem is not fully solved. The municipal police have limited powers: they can issue a fine, calm down a hooligan, or detain a suspect until backup arrives, but they do not investigate criminal offenses. Serious theft or drug trafficking must be handled exclusively by the state police.
Bratislava's leadership emphasizes that if the government does not increase the number of state police officers on the streets and strengthen criminal liability for petty theft, crime will simply move from the well-lit Trnavské mýto to neighboring, less protected streets.
What you should do:
- Be mindful of your backpacks and pockets at Trnavské mýto, Kamenné námestie, and public transport stops — pickpockets often work in crowds while boarding trams.
- If you witness a crime or feel unsafe, look for the nearest patrol — thanks to the increased number of patrols, it is now much easier to find law enforcement officers.
- In case of an emergency, call 159 (municipal police) or 158 (state police).
