Three public transport (MHD) stops in Prešov now have green roofs planted with vegetation. This is not just an aesthetic choice, but part of the city's strategy to adapt to climate change, making waiting for the bus more comfortable during summer heat.
The new ecological structures were installed at three busy locations in the city. You can see them at the stops:
- «Veľká pošta» (Main Post Office);
- «Martina Benku» (towards Solivarská);
- «Volgogradská» (towards Prostějovská).
The project is part of a broader initiative to improve the urban environment, as reported by the local publication Prešovak (here).
Why are green roofs needed?
Living roofs on bus stops serve several important functions. In summer, they help lower the temperature of the surrounding area, creating a natural air conditioning effect and reducing the heating of the asphalt.
- Retains rainwater. Plants absorb a significant amount of precipitation, relieving the city's sewage system during heavy rain.
- Cleans the air. Vegetation absorbs dust and harmful particles, making the air cleaner.
- Supports biodiversity. The roofs become a home for beneficial insects, such as bees and butterflies.
Hardy sedum plants (stonecrops), which are drought-resistant and do not require complex care, were used for the greening.
Part of a nationwide trend
Prešov is not the first city in Slovakia to implement such an initiative. Similar eco-stops have been successfully operating for several years in Bratislava and Košice, where they have proven their effectiveness.
The installation of green roofs is one of the steps aimed at creating a more sustainable and pleasant urban environment. It shows how even small changes in infrastructure can have a positive impact on ecology and the comfort of residents.
