The question is not rhetorical: the driver, whom the Slovak police stopped on the D1 highway in the direction of Poprad, already found out the answer with his own wallet. The radar recorded a speed of 203 km/h where 130 km/h is allowed. The excess was 73 km/h, which is no longer "a little rush," but a category of serious violations, for which new, significantly stricter rates have been applied since May this year.
Photos from the radar and information about the incident were published by the Police of Slovakia. According to them, the driver received a block fine and paid it on the spot. For us, this is a reason to remind you how speed fines currently work in Slovakia, because the rules have recently changed, and not in favor of speeders.
What the driver from D1 paid
Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h outside a populated area is the highest category of violation. On the spot, the police can issue a fine of up to 800 euros: this is the maximum provided for in the block procedure.
But the matter may not end on the spot. If the police forward the materials to an administrative body (správne konanie, i.e., an administrative proceeding where the case is handled not by a patrol officer, but by an official), the consequences will be more serious:
- the fine increases to 1000 euros;
- a driving ban – from 6 months to 3 years.
This time, the speeder got away with a block fine paid on the spot. But with such an excess, forwarding the case to an administrative body is a completely realistic scenario, so he could have also lost his license.
What has changed since May 1, 2026
Since May 1, Slovakia has tightened responsibility for speeding: the thresholds for stricter penalties have been lowered. In simple terms, for the same speed that cost a moderate fine a year ago, you can now get the maximum.
Benchmarks for current rates:
- within a populated area, exceeding the speed limit by 70 km/h results in a fine of about 600 euros;
- outside a populated area (highways, main roads), exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 km/h costs up to 800 euros on the spot;
- administrative proceedings in serious cases mean up to 1000 euros plus a revoked license.

What Ukrainian drivers should remember
If you drive on Slovak highways, with a Ukrainian or Slovak license, it doesn't matter, the rules are the same for everyone. A few practical points:
- The speed limit on highways is 130 km/h, but radars and section speed measurements are regularly installed, especially on the D1.
- It is better to pay the fine issued on the spot: ignoring it can turn the case into an administrative proceeding with higher penalties.
- A driving ban in Slovakia is also valid for holders of foreign licenses: you will not be able to drive in the country.
And most importantly: the difference between 130 and 203 km/h is not just 800 euros. It's a braking distance that almost doubles, and chances of reacting to an unforeseen situation that drop to zero. The police publish such radar photos for a reason. This is a warning to everyone who thinks that "an empty highway means you can speed."
