The Slovak economy in 2024 was driven mainly by energy and automotive companies, as well as banks that benefited from a period of high interest rates. Despite this, the list of the most profitable companies again does not include innovative or technological leaders — which only highlights the country's status as a production base for international corporations.

Most Interesting Companies of the Year
1. Slovenské elektrárne — €815 million
The absolute leader of the ranking. The main driver of growth was the full launch of the 3rd unit of the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant, which sharply increased the volume of carbon-free electricity produced. The company benefited from high energy prices and stable demand, although its results were partly limited by regulated tariffs for the public.
2. Kia Slovakia — €682.6 million
The most efficient manufacturer in the country: the company achieved more than double the profit of Volkswagen with significantly lower revenue. The high profit figure is a result of production automation and high demand for the Sportage and Ceed models. Kia remains the most successful car company in Slovakia in terms of profitability.
3. Slovnaft — €366 million
Despite increased windfall taxes, the oil refining giant continues to show record performance thanks to favorable margins in petrochemicals. The company's successes are largely driven by the situation in global markets.
4. Západoslovenská energetika (ZSE) — €317.5 million
With minimal own revenue, the company showed huge profit thanks to dividends from subsidiaries. The main event of the year was the merger with Východoslovenská energetika into one large energy group.
Which Sectors Earned the Most
Energy — The Undisputed Leader
Almost half of the 20 companies in the ranking are from the energy sector. Reasons:
stable demand for electricity and gas,
favorable prices in European markets,
commissioning of new capacities (e.g., Mochovce 3).
Energy today forms the basis of Slovakia's profitability.
Finance — High Efficiency Despite New Taxes
Banks — Slovenská sporiteľňa, VÚB, Tatra banka, ČSOB — had a strong operational year thanks to high ECB rates. However, net profit was reduced by new additional taxes. Despite this, the banking sector maintained its place among the most profitable in the country.
Industry — Two Key Groups
Automotive: Kia, Volkswagen, Continental
Military Production: VOP Nováky — one of the most impressive results due to increased demand for ammunition in Europe.
The automotive industry dominates in sales volume, but only individual players are among the most profitable.
Why Are There No Innovative Companies on the List?
The ranking clearly shows: Slovakia remains a production site country. There are no technology startups at the top. This indicates that key innovations and added value are created outside the country.
