Students in Slovakia will face higher prices for dormitory accommodation this year. After a long period when prices did not change, some universities have already announced new rates starting from September 1, 2026. For example, the Technical University of Košice (Technická univerzita v Košiciach) explains this by inflation and increased maintenance costs, which have not been reviewed since 2023.
Rising Dormitory Prices
From the new academic year 2026/2027, you will have to pay more for accommodation. For example, at the Technical University of Košice, the cheapest bed will cost 85 euros, and the most expensive will cost 123 euros per month. For comparison, in April 2026, prices were lower: from 75 euros for the cheapest place to 110 euros for a higher standard room with a balcony.
The University of Matej Bel (Univerzita Mateja Bela) in Banská Bystrica has also raised prices: the cheapest bed now costs 77 euros per month, while previously it cost 70 euros.
Here are the estimated prices for dormitory accommodation at some Slovak universities for the 2026/2027 academic year:
- University of Prešov (Prešovská univerzita): from 75 to 85 euros
- University of St. Cyril and Methodius (Univerzita sv. Cyrila a Metoda) in Trnava: from 80 to 90 euros
- University of Žilina (Žilinská univerzita): from 70 to 102 euros
- University of Matej Bel (Univerzita Mateja Bela) in Banská Bystrica: from 77 to 105 euros
- Technical University of Košice (Technická univerzita v Košiciach): from 85 to 123 euros
Demand for Student Housing
Most universities predict that there will not be enough places in dormitories for everyone who wants them again. This means it will be even harder for students to find affordable housing.
Alternative: Renting an Apartment
Due to rising dormitory prices, students are increasingly looking for an alternative in renting apartments. However, this is also not a cheap option. For example, in Košice, you will have to pay from 500 to 900 euros per month to rent a two-room apartment.
At the same time, the city of Košice is launching a large-scale program to build state rental housing. Over 5,000 affordable apartments are planned to be built in the coming years. It is predicted that rent in these apartments will be regulated – around 520 euros for a two-room apartment per month (excluding utilities). And if your employer makes contributions, the amount may be even lower.
What to Look For When Renting
If you are looking for rental housing, be careful not to fall for scammers. Always read the contract carefully, check who the owner is, and clarify all payment terms.
