This week, the first finished part of the large "Živé námestie" (Living Square) project opened in Bratislava for visitors. The southern part of Poštová street and the central part of Námestie SNP have been renovated. According to the city authorities, this is the biggest reconstruction of these locations in recent decades.
What has changed?
The changes affected not only the appearance but also the underground utilities. Instead of different types of pavement, there is now granite paving everywhere, pedestrian areas are wider, and the space for cars has been reduced. Bicycle infrastructure has also been set up.
The area has become significantly greener. The city planted 18 new trees, expanded lawns, installed an irrigation system, and cared for old trees. The project also includes collecting rainwater, which will be used to water the plants.
New benches, trash cans, modern lighting have been installed in the renovated space, and new stairs and an accessible ramp to the nearby hospital and pharmacy have been built. Thanks to the change in pedestrian routes, the *Pamätník SNP* (Monument of the Slovak National Uprising) is now more visible and easier to approach.
During the work, the *Pamätník Jána Kuciaka a Martiny Kušnírovej* (Monument to Ján Kuciak and Martina Kušnírová) was also moved. It is now installed in the new paving.
Further work and funding
Construction work is still ongoing. Road markings for pedestrians, street lighting, and building illumination are expected to be completed in the coming days. Work is also continuing on Námestie Nežnej revolúcie and Špitálska street: paving is being laid there, trees are being planted, tram platforms are being built, and new shelters are being installed at stops.
The total cost of the project is €7,006,758.38 including VAT. The "Živé námestie" project is partly funded by European Union funds under the "Slovakia" program.
