In Bratislava, on the right bank of the Danube, near Starý most (Old Bridge) in the Petržalka district, the new Nábrežný park Staré Lido has opened. This park is the first phase of a large project called "Bratislava Danube Park," which aims to create a continuous green area along the river from Devín to Čunov, with a total length of up to 28 kilometers.
Previously, this area was neglected, overgrown, and filled with construction waste. Now, it has natural paths made of gravel and wood chips, benches, wooden elements, information boards, and barbecue areas. The park is about 400 meters long. It offers a beautiful view of the Danube and the historic center of Bratislava, making it an attractive place for relaxation. Since its opening, the park has become popular with families with children, cyclists, and runners.
Cooperation and Funding
The Nábrežný park Staré Lido project was realized through the cooperation of the capital city of Bratislava and the development companies JTRE and Penta Real Estate. These companies are also preparing large construction projects, Southbank and Nové Lido, on the right bank of the Danube. The investment in the park's restoration was 1.1 million euros, with 70% financed by JTRE and 30% by Penta Real Estate.
According to the Mayor of Bratislava, Matúš Vallo, the restoration of the area was approached with special care, as a forest in the city center is a valuable resource that must be preserved. The main idea of the project, developed by the architectural firm ZAAN architects, was to use the existing natural environment, intervene minimally, and add elements that enhance the experience of this unique place.
Future of Bratislava Danube Park
Nábrežný park Staré Lido is just the beginning of a large project. Future phases include the creation of gravel beaches and the restoration of Ovsišťské rameno (Ovsište arm) under the Apollo Bridge. The vision for Bratislava Danube Park includes not only improving recreational opportunities for residents but also protecting nature along the Danube, helping to adapt to climate change, and restoring water bodies and wetlands.
In addition to the park, the Staré Lido and Nové Lido areas plan to expand the center of Bratislava with residential, office, and service facilities. Importantly, a green belt will be preserved, and the city will receive about 100 new rental apartments from the investors.
